Enter your initial investment, current stock price, and the annual dividend (either as a dollar amount per share or as a yield percentage). Set the expected annual dividend growth rate and stock price appreciation rate. The calculator projects your portfolio forward, showing how reinvested dividends compound into additional shares.
Each year, the calculator:
New Shares = Annual Dividend Income / Current Stock Price
Yield on Cost = Annual Dividend Income / Original Investment × 100
Historical data shows that reinvesting dividends accounts for a significant portion of total stock market returns. Since 1930, roughly 40% of the S&P 500's total return has come from reinvested dividends. Dividend Aristocrats — stocks that have raised their dividends for 25+ consecutive years — have outperformed the broader market over long periods.
A Dividend Reinvestment Plan (DRIP) automatically uses your cash dividends to purchase additional shares. Most brokerages offer DRIPs at no extra cost, and many allow fractional share purchases.
Yield on cost measures your annual dividend income relative to your original investment. If you invested $10,000 and now receive $800 per year in dividends, your yield on cost is 8%, even if the current yield on the stock is only 3%.
Dividend growth has a compounding effect. A 7% annual dividend growth rate doubles the per-share payout in about 10 years. Combined with DRIP, the number of shares also grows, creating powerful exponential wealth building.
